Belgian author Alban van der Straten has just published a book on lesser-known Belgian explorers, and has dedicated a section to “Le mandarin des steppes,” who is introduced at the end of the prior chapter as “the mysterious Ling Darin.” Van der Straten begins his 10 pages on Paul Splingaerd by describing him as half Dickens character, and half adventurer à la Joseph Conrad, and continues with the highlights of Paul’s life and his contributions to both China and Belgium.
